Spiritual laziness is a condition in which a believer gradually neglects prayer, Bible study, fellowship with the Holy Spirit and other believers, and obedience to God. Unlike physical tiredness, spiritual laziness is characterized by indifference toward spiritual growth and a lack of passion for the things of God.
Understanding the signs of spiritual laziness discussed below can help believers identify areas of weakness and renew their commitment to God.
Is Spiritual Laziness a Sin?
Yes, spiritual laziness is a sin. It is a stage of backsliding. It is a sin that does not immediately lead to death, but it leads to sins that lead to death.
Peter and Judas Iscariot are two biblical examples of people who were caught in this dilemma that led to greater sins. Peter was spiritually lazy in the place of prayer, despite Jesus’ repeated checks on him, and was not able to build up enough spiritual stamina to overcome the temptations of the day. The same thing happened to Judas. He left the fellowship of the believers and ended up selling his Master to sinners.
That is why God calls believers to be diligent, watchful, and steadfast in their faith, and the Bible vehemently warns against spiritual slothfulness, complacency, and lukewarm Christianity.
9 Signs of Spiritual Laziness
1. Neglecting Prayer is a sign of spiritual laziness:
When a believer’s prayer life becomes irregular and their prayer altar starts growing cold, that is a sign that they are spiritually lazy.
We saw this in Peter’s life. During the hours of prayer, he was slumbering even when Jesus specifically tapped him and called him to pray so he would not enter into temptation.
Neglecting prayer is not something God should understand, it is a sign of spiritual laziness.
2. Losing Interest in Reading the Bible is a sign of spiritual laziness:
Proverbs 26:15 NKJV states, “The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; it wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.”
The Word of God is spiritual food, food for the spirit and for the soul—for the renewal of the mind. For believers to never doubt their Christian faith nor backslide from it, they must feed their faith daily, for Romans 10:17 clearly says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Losing interest in the Bible is a sign of spiritual laziness.
3. Becoming Spiritually Lukewarm is a sign of spiritual laziness
Jesus identifies all humans as either hot Christians or cold sinners. When believers are neither cold nor hot, they make things difficult for Him, and that will lead to Him spitting them out of His mouth.
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” — Revelation 3:15–16 NKJV
4. Delaying Obedience to God is a sign of spiritual laziness:
Delayed obedience is as good as disobedience. When God gives believers instructions, they must promptly obey Him as a portrayal of their love and devotion to Him.
When they slack or mix His instructions with other things, it shows that God and spiritual things are not their priority at that moment.
5. Neglecting Christian Fellowship is a sign of spiritual laziness:
Forsaking the assembling of themselves together, as is the manner of some, is a sign of spiritual laziness.
Proverbs 27:17 NKJV says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Any believer who is not being sharpened is spiritually dull and will grow spiritually duller.
This is another thing Judas did. In John 13:30 NKJV, while Jesus was supping with His disciples, Judas walked away, and we saw where he eventually ended—he ended up in betraying his Master and committing suicide.
6. Becoming More Vulnerable to Sin is a sign of spiritual laziness
Spiritually lazy believers are more vulnerable to sin than spiritually conscious and alert believers.
Peter was still a disciple of Jesus, the one Jesus handed His ministry over to, and yet he tried to pick a neutral ground by not associating with Jesus when the pressure came.
When believers are compromising here and there, they are spiritually lazy and backsliding.
7. Focusing More on Earthly Things Than Eternal Things is a sign of spiritual laziness:
Believers who esteem earthly things above heavenly pursuits are spiritually lazy. Judas is a clear example. He was pursuing money and went as far as human trading just to get it. When eternal things lose their pull on a believer’s heart, spiritual laziness has already taken root.
8. Making Excuses Instead of Pursuing God is a sign of spiritual laziness:
Whatever excuses believers make instead of pursuing God’s plans, purposes, and pursuits are demonstrations of spiritual laziness.
9. People Pleasing is a sign of spiritual laziness:
People pleasing is another exhibit of spiritual laziness. Peter denied Jesus three times because he was trying to please a damsel, a maid, and the people standing by him.
And even later, to please the Jewish Christians, Galatians 2:12 NKJV reports that Peter “before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.”
When the fear of people begins to govern a believer’s choices, spiritual laziness is at work.

Spiritual laziness weakens a believer’s relationship with God, but through repentance and renewed devotion, spiritual passion can be restored.
If believers find themselves caught in this web, they should not delay their repentance and reunion to the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and other believers.
